New Disease Outbreak in Nigeria, FG Warns
In a recent report to RALD NEWS MEDIA, the Nigerian Federal Government issued a warning to citizens regarding the surge of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), particularly during the dry season. The 2022/2023 statistics revealed 2,765 suspected and 303 confirmed cases, with 190 deaths across 140 local government areas in 30 states, including the Federal Capital Territory.
Ifedayo Adetifa, Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), emphasized the heightened risk during the dry season, attributing it to upper respiratory tract infections in crowded and poorly ventilated conditions. The majority of CSM cases are concentrated in the "Meningitis Belt," spanning 19 northern states, the FCT, and some southern states.
Adetifa assured the public of the government's active efforts in preventing, detecting, and responding to CSM cases. Despite advancements in surveillance, diagnostics, and vaccination, CSM remains a significant public health threat in Nigeria. Adetifa underscored the importance of vaccination, avoiding close contact with confirmed cases, and practicing respiratory hygiene. He also warned against smoking and household overcrowding.
To address the outbreak, the government has implemented collaborative measures, including regular communication with high-burden states. Adetifa urged state governments and public health authorities to mobilize resources for preparedness and response activities, emphasizing the need for enhanced coordination and communication nationwide. These measures aim to mitigate the impact of CSM outbreaks on people, health systems, economies, and communities during the heightened risk of the dry season.
